TÜSİAD adressed the future of low carbon economy after Durban
TÜSİAD organized a conference titled “Competitiveness in a Low Carbon Economy: Prospects for 2012 and Beyond” with UBCCE, of which TÜSİAD is a founder and member. The conference was held with the participation of Erdoğan Bayraktar, Minister of Environment and Urban Planning, and "Green Business Support Strategy" report prepared by UBCCE was presented to the public.
TÜSİAD and “Union of Black Sea and Caspian Confederation of Enterprises – UBCCE” organized a conference titled “Competitiveness in a Low Carbon Economy: Prospects for 2012 and Beyond” at The Marmara Hotel in Istanbul on December 22, 2011.
The opening speeches of the conference were made by Erdoğan Bayraktar, Minister of Environment and Urban Planning of Turkey, Ümit Boyner, Chairwoman of Board of Directors of TÜSİAD, and Musa Galip Eroğlu, Chairman of Environment Working Group.
In her speech, Ümit Boyner stated that it is a must for Turkey to obtain a correct position in the international regime this time, with the public and private sectors closely monitoring the new climate regime being created with the global climate talks. Mrs. Boyner stated that the talks for creating the climate change regime led to significant political struggles at international level, and said that, considering the outcomes of the talks held at Durban, the progress achieved at Cancun last year for the recognition of the special conditions of Turkey was taken a further step this year.
At the conference, the "Green Business Support Strategy" report prepared by UBCCE was presented to the public. In the frame of the presentation of the report, Herbert Kopnick, Representative of German Association of Green Enterprises and Bavarian State Ministry of Environment and Public Health, and Astrid Denker, Green Business Support Strategy Specialist, made presentations.
At the conference, a panel on "Green Business: Best Practices" was held as Mr. Osman F. Boyner, Chairman of TÜSİAD International Executive Board and Chairman of Board of Directors of BD Automotive and Electrical Vehicles Inc., the moderator. The trends in energy efficiency and environment-friendly design were discussed at the panel. Süfyan Emiroğlu, General Director of Industry at Ministry of Sciences, Industry and Technology of Turkey, Ali Pandır, CEO of Tofaş-Fiat, Ali Rıza Ersoy, Deputy General Manager of Siemens Turkey and Dr. Gülay Yaşin, Turkey Director of German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) made speeches at the panel.
Furthermore, the impressions of public and private sector representatives concerning the outcomes of Climate Change Conference held at Durban with regards to Turkey and Turkish business community were shared in another panel of the conference. In the session moderated by Levent Çakıroğlu, CEO of Arçelik and Spokesperson of Climate Platform, Mr. Sedat Kadıoğlu, Deputy Undersecretary of Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning of Turkey, Ambassador Mithat Rende, Chief Climate Negotiator of Turkey, and Mr. Murat Sungur Bursa, President of Zorlu Holding Energy Group and Gediz Kaya, Vice President of Board of Directors of Climate Change and Carbon Management Association, participated as speakers.
